==History==
===Historical Overview===

Caear is a lush expanse of mainly deciduous forest situated in the southern hemisphere, in a semi-coastal area west of the [[Besusy Pastureland]]. It has remained inhabitated by zu'aan throughout most of recorded history, and has been the site of many wars and territorial disputes throughout the ages. Discovered by the nomadic zu'aan tribes that preceded recorded history, records and ruins indicate that Caear was fully colonized in the midst of the Ancient Age. An attractive, mild forest, it served as the hub for villages, trade roads, and zu'aan agriculture. It is theorized that the forest ground that remains today is close to two thirds of the initial forest, due to zu'aan deforestation and the creation of crop fields.

In the modern ages, however, these rural zu'aan settlements did not grow, and as of the pre-Awakening era Caear remained a very isolated and rural expanse of villages and small towns, by no means poor but also not very advanced relative to their inland peers. In the timeframe very close to the kin'toni outbreak, Caear did suffer a boom in tourism and tourism-related infractructure, due to its peaceful and cozy atmosphere and the close presence of the ocean. This, however, was shortly interrupted, and a great number of abandoned construction sites, as well as village ruins, remain in the forest to this day. The Awakening Age was not kind on the people of Caear.

In fact, most, if not all of them, were anihilated during the very first kin'toni waves. Caear remained relatively abandoned for a great number of years following the apocalypse, harboring only few passing zu'aan runaways and the occasional kin'toni tribes, who saw little value in an abandoned region like this, far from other zu'aan-centric areas. So as time went on, it became a valuable hideout spot for those who opposed the genetic invaders, and small communities formed.
It is worth noting, however, that excluding the vast pasturelands to the east of Caear, this zone was in the middle of a kin'toni-heavy area, from which little zu'aan influence remained. Conflicts and massacres would come to Caear soon, and the few communities that remained within it would disperse further and further.

The local kin'toni clans took amusement in hunting these small setllements and cornering them in the forest, and strategically allowed them to build a false sense of safety before striking again. It is not an exaggeration to say that Caear became the kin'toni's hunting playground.
Things, however, changed as the Twilight Age loomed by. Kin'toni became less active, and moved north. The perpetual persecution and hunting came to a sudden and unexpected halt. Needless to say, the small and runaway zu'aan communities that remained still in this kin'toni area managed to band together at last, and towards the end of the first century of the Shattering, the rudimentary walls of a new city were being raised.
==Geography ==

Caear is a seasonal deciduous forest that spans nearly 250 kilometers off the coast, starting at the estuary of the river Euem and ending at the same ocean it borders, as it bends inwards towards the land. It is an amiable, cold temperate zone mainly inhabitated by deciduous trees, which shed their leaves on the colder seasons, and is home to a great variety of wild life, though most of it is not very dangerous to zu'aan. It encompasses a territory of roughly 3,593 square kilometers. It is mainly composed of semi-plain ground, with a few short hills in between. It is crossed by a single river, the Yajan, and borders on the north with another, the river Eeum. Its eastern border is fully lining with the Besusy Pasturelands, and its western and southern border with the beach and the ocean.

The climate is semi-tropical with moist humidity during the entire year round cycle. It has somewhat high levels of rain, and it snows moderately during the winter. As the flora in mainly deciduous, trees are left barren during the winter and shed during autumn. Temperatures outside of winter are rarely beneath the negative degrees, but it can happen. The forest is susceptible to rain storms, thunder storms, and light to heavy hail during the whole year. Snow storms during winter are exceedingly rare, but ever since the Twilight Age they are not wholly uncommon. There is an very little chance for the formation of tornados, tsunamis, or other natural disasters except earthquakes.

Earthquakes are very rare, but the geological composition of the region makes them a possibility. There are no volcanos. Flooding may occasionally happen during seasons of high rain, but they are not severe. Wildfires are rare and typically zu'aan-made. The biome structure of Caear is neatly divided into four sub-biomes; the forest itself, the forest clearings, natural or otherwise (many of the 'clearings' are remnants from the agriculture-heavy days of deforestation before the Awakening Age, which some of them are once more in use. These are considered clearings for classification purposes), the river and riverbank, and the beach-side cliffs. The forest itself is the most life-dense zone of the four.

The clearings are mainly used for zu'aan infrastructure, present and abandoned, as well as crop fields, present and abandoned. The river Eeum and the river Yajan are predominantly used for freshwater fishing as well as sites for hydrological energy centers, before they were abandoned following the Awakening Age. The current zu'aan occupiers have considered the creation of a dam, but lack the proper technology. The beach-side is fairly small and mainly composed of rough rocky cliffs that lead immediately to the ocean, and small secluded patches of sand occasionally dotting the coast, many of them inaccessible. They are used for fishing and collection of seafood, mainly crustaceans, algae and shellfish.

As of the Twilight Age, the climate has been declining in temperature. Caear is not particularly close to either the south pole or the equator, and therefore should be able to hold on regularly for some time.

== Plants ==

Plant life in cassoen is plenty and can be found in many forms throughout the entire biome. Here are some of their local species: Cassoen, a wild vegetable that can be found on prairies and forest lines. It is a pale brown root shaped like a pair of hearts, white on the inside and with a rough skin marked by ring impressions. As a root vegetable, it stays completely underground through all stages of development. Its leaves are long and round, deep green with light streaks on the inside, and pointing sideways. Due to low nutritional value and the fact that it does not have much taste according to zu'aan standards, it is largely disregarded as a vegetable for culinary purposes.

A number of cultivars have been attempted, but none became very popular, and even before the Awakening Age came the most numerous species of cassoen was this wild variety. It grows during the entire year, typically ripening during spring and autumn, and is a popular snack for herbivores, who enjoy looking for the leaves on the ground and digging out the root. It typically grows in clusters. Komiuen, meaning 'bird cry', a low hanging vine that prefers to make its home on other trees, covering their trunks and spreading from branch to branch. It is a deep green vine with the consistency of rope, with long oval shaped leaves spread around the stalk.

It grows around the trunk of trees until it reaches a desirable height (3-4 meters) and then it keeps spreading through the branches until it finds another tree, in which case it will spread its seeds there. Otherwise, it will simply spread its seeds to the wind. Its name comes from the fact that is an incredibly fast growing vine, and considering how sturdy it is, its nearly impossible for small species of animals to rip it apart, much to the desmay of birds, whose nests are commonly ravaged by it. The existence of komiuen all throughout the forest is a big reason as to why bird species in this area prefer to build their nests on high ground, rather than on tree branches.

It is known, as records, indicate it, that it was used by tribal zu'aan as makeshift rope material and as a resource for building other things. It is also known, however, that in order for it to hold and not shred after being separated from its body lay in a special treatment that unfortunately has been lost to time. Though this was only a matter of relative importance for archeologists and anthropologists before the Awakening Age, it is know a crucial piece of information which the post-apocalyptic zu'aan have been trying to reconstruct. As of the Twilight Age, through much trial and error and by employing a large number of refining methods, they have been more or less successful, and the plant is once more harvested to be used by zu'aan in their construction endeavors. The plant is not edible by zu'aan standards.

== Animals ==

Animal wild life, though relatively tame, is also plenty within the reaches of Caear. Here are some local species of some renown: Tedla, a large flightless bird species that mainly inhabits the western and southern shore of Caear. Semi-aquatic, they enjoy passing their time in the secluded beaches lining the edge of the cliffs, fishing with their long, serrated beaks. They have large yellow eyes, one on each side of its head, and a combination of blue and white feathers. Their tails spiral upwards continuously, as do the crown on the back of their heads. They typically have a red or yellow streak above their eyes. They show sexual dimorphism, as the males are somewhat larger than the females and possess five finger claws, while the females have four finger claws.

They can up to three meters tall and 140 kilograms. They have wings, which they are unable to use for flight and mainly employ in mating rituals. Considered 'exotic' birds, and very territorial and hostile to new life, the zu'aan tend to avoid them altogether. Railc, a multicored, land bearing invertebrate that despite its appearance, cannot be found on water. This weird, but very common creature is a type of invertebrate. It's about the size of a shrimp, has eight tentacles and a long, thick tail. They have a thin, but strong skin which is usually either light red, dark blue or bronze or a combination of these colors, making for a rainbow repertoire. They live in temperate areas, found all over Caear, especially in the north, and are common.

They're herbivores and their small, long mouths and rough tongue are ideal for eating berries. They are hunted by a plethora of carnivorous species, although, perhaps due to their unusual body type when it comes to land species, are only hunted by animals which may be found near water and are used to consuming fish and other water species, and are generally avoided by others. They're nocturnal and rely on their hearing and taste buds to get around. They do have thin, narrow eyes, but their sight is relatively poor. On the other hand, they have huge noses and small, round ears.

Their heads are small and narrow in comparison to their bodies. They make sounds ranging from very low pitched to fairly high pitched and have a extremely large range of sounds they make to indicate discoveries, dangers and otherwise communicate with each other, and are as such regarded as a fairly intelligent species. These creatures are very timid, but they're territorial in terms of personal space. They mate twice a year with a specifically selected partner for life. Which, with their short lifespans, isn't extraordinary. They are harvested by zu'aan for culinary purposes, as they are not very much unlike other cephalopods in terms of taste and composition.

It is unknown how they came to develop a form typically suited for water biomes that exists solely on land. They have lungs and breathe like any other mammal.
