==History==

The Atan Tribal Zu’aan (officially the Reunited Shahdom of Atan Peoples) originated in the Mal Jade Cliffs in the year 4E 127 before migrating to the Mekyba mangrove marshes in the year 4E 342 to escape the hostile Kin'toni clans which were in the Mal Jades. As the Xerea Empire collapsed and their Emperor and Royal Family retreated to the Aqidwyz landmass behind the Qobvoudon mountains, the Atan people, who were both an ethno-linguistic group within the Empire, declared Ismailyaka as their Jakilashah, or it is said in their language Supreme King of the Most High. When the kin'toni first began to attack the Hive Cities of the Atan over thirty seven million Atan’s resided there, with the population being decimated to a mere million in under a decade's time.

5 years into the reign of Jakliahshah Ismailyaka’s reign in the year 4E 132, the Atan declared the creation of the Reunited Shahdom of the Atan Peoples, a continuation of the short-lived Atan Kingdom which existed from 4E 127-132. Under his reign, a Royal Court for running the primitive but developing Atan Government was formed, surviving members of Ismailyakas family were located and brought to the capital city of the Atan Shahdom, Lynnounis, home to over 23,000 Atans and the Seat of Government and home of the Jakilashah. His brother, Reza, was made Crown Prince until a suitable heir was produced, which came 2 years later when Ismailyaka married Zyrithia II, a Princess who was the daughter of King Xyrron IV, a witch doctor who would go on to greatly help the Atan in developing chemical weapons to conquer their neighbors the Principality of Arkanvale and Kingdom of Eldoria.

Following a bloody war of conquest which was launched against Eldoria in 4E 135, Ismailyaka was killed fighting to seize the capital of Eldoria, Calmara which was home to well over 13,000 Zu’aan and was one of the most populous cities in the entire world, except for those of the Xerea Empire on the Aqidwyz landmass, thousands of miles away. The son of Ismailyaka was not suitable to take up the throne at this time, so his brother Reza became Jakilashah and declared himself Supreme Leader of the zu’aan and declared it his intention to conquer the planet, reunify all of the zu’aan, kill all kin'toni and under the leadership of a single Global Government, reach into the stars.

Reza instituted a policy of forced childbirth and execution for all women who did not have a child by the age of 22 years old, where they were then placed into facilities of forced labor and conscription into the armed forces. The population of the Shahdoom soon exceeded well over 15,000 and within five years into his rule it had soared to 30,000. A policy of forced conscription into the Royal Army of HIs Majesty was also created, forges were constructed to melt down the iron ore which was abundant in the cliffs in order to make swords, armor and metal bows and arrows. By the time the army reached the size of 6,000 troops, which was nearly 1⁄5 of the Atan population, Reza declared war on the Yakoni Kingdom which bordered them and in what is today known as the 2 Month War forced the Yakoni Kingdom into submission, executed their King and took his consort as a sex slave.

Production of Calcia, a drug which could be created by boiling down the fern plants of Yakonis forests, was produced on order of Reza during this period, with hopes of it being a miracle cure for the kin’toni plague or at the very least a super-serum which could lead to the zu’aan defeating them.
Calmara would fall to Reza 7 months later following a long and drawn out siege on the city which starved well over 1000 of its residents, mostly children, to death. Upon the fall of Calmara, which was home to well over 2.9 million inhabitants, Reza moved the capital of the Shahdom to it. Not all was well under his rule however, there were sects of the Zaydisha religion which sought to seize all means of production on the planet and construct a colony ship to make it off world.

With a decent portion of the planet's south western landmass being conquered by Reza, had he been overthrown or forced for political reasons to go along with the plans for the Zaydishas plans the resources and manpower which he had under his command would have sufficed to do so and it is likely that the Zu’aan could have found a new home. By 4E 182, Reza had begun to grow old, his grand daughter Kaylisha II who was radicalized by Zaydisha sects at a young age and converted to their religion at the age of 14 years old assassinated him in his sleep with a venomous serpent she obtained from her older sister Yhanliza. Following this she assumed the throne due to both of her parents being killed in action while serving in the line of duty of HM Armed Forces 27 years prior. Kaylisha assumed the role of Jakilashahbanu, which she soon transformed to simply be Padishahbanu.

In 4E 201, after a 20 year long bloody Jihad of conquest and forced conversion to Zaydishism, the weakened remnants of the Atan people were once again under one ruler. This did not last long. The Atan, once able to hold their own against the Kin’toni hordes, were now barely protected by their falling walls. At first, Padishahbanu Kaylisha tried her best to repair these walls, but she soon fell sick and was constrained to her bed - and from there, he saw the once-mighty nation of Reza fall to its knees. Lynnounis, the former capital of the Shahdom, was the first to fall. The hordes infected every single of its inhabitants, and turned towards attacking Calmara. The siege of the capital was tough, and Kaylisha, sick and bedridden, decided that it was her last will to go to the frontlines and die for her falling Empire. However, the kin’toni were too strong - her final army was defeated.

The hordes flooded into the city, infecting over 10,000 of its inhabitants in a single day, known as the Zafor (Tribulation) in the Atan language. Emergency councils formed, and the remaining Zu’aan fled and reverted into a tribal, bronze age lifestyle in the Orough Wasteland.

==Psychology==

The remaining Zu’aan in the Atan tribe are incredibly patriotic and nostalgic, especially towards the old era of Jakilashah Reza. While he was, in reality, an evil monarch who enslaved his people to fit into his dream of world conquest, the remaining tribesmen associate him with safety and glory of an era they seek again. In all settlements of the tribe, there are statues of his face, some artifacts from his era, and some built by tribal artisans with the material they could scrape. In the Maliki majority faith, Reza is now regarded as a deity and messiah, the Malikishah (Higher Ruler of the the Most High.) This love is manifested all over their culture and psychology.

Apart from that, ancient Atan psychology still holds strong. As an ethnic group, they are obsessed with strength, hunting and fighting. Trials as such do not exist in the tribe - rather, disagreements are sorted out by brawl, as physical prowess is regarded as a meter of the individual’s closeness to the Malikishah. The Atan harbor resentment, prejudice, and even hate, towards all other clans - specially the remnants and vestiges of the clans they once fought. They also believe on the Kin’toni being demons, not any kind of natural being. This further strengthens their perception of physical prowess as spiritual as well, as only the strongest can face the Kin’toni and survive.

The Zafor plays a huge role in Atan psychology. As the remaining Atan are only those who fled Calmara, this event is normally regarded not only as catastrophic but as a direct punishment from Reza to Kaylisha, who converted out of the Maliki faith. Curiosity and inquisitive behavior is heavily discouraged in the tribe, with this being a common cause for beatings. Children in the tribe are expected only to learn and repeat what their educators and parents have taught them, without any kind of disagreement.

==Culture==

Hailing from a area of Taerel where the landscape was far more hostile than many others, the Atans were hunters skilled in killing and butchering their own food and put strength, honor in battle and a fierce level of militancy above absolutely all else in their society with children being taught at a young age that there is no higher honor other than to die a martyr, which they called a Hijkleez, and believed that they would be given Eternal Glory in the afterlife. Under the rule of the Shahs, parents were forced to beat their children severely and to this day the practice of beating children in order to ‘’set them straight’’ remains common practice among the Atan. Tribal education also places major emphasis on physical strength, physical punishment for wrong doings and the fact that any act of weakness no matter how small is an unacceptable action of immense dishonor for both oneself and their family.

A common pastime of the tribal children in their villages is constructing bows and arrows, sharpening spears, and forging swords if they have the know-how - which happens to have been passed down from generation to generation. The Atan have not developed a concept of remorse or mourning with families frequently celebrating whenever their children die in battle with enemy tribes because they view this as the greatest level of honor which a parent and a Zu’aan can achieve. Funerals, crying or displaying any emotion when someone dies which is of a somber tone, and anything else which the Morskeema Police view as unacceptable displays of weakness are punished severely.

Education is very important to them, as is learning about their culture, faith and the so-called great men which came before them. Depending on the village and the tribal elders, schools which are known as training centers are either dominated by the Maliki faith school of thought being implemented or the Zaydish school of thought, internal conflicts between the two groups as they fight for power often break out and lead to immense destruction, deaths and even Kin'toni seizing the opportunity to infect villagers.

Within the training centers, questions are not asked. Students are taught what the educators believe must be taught and they are to accept it or are beaten severely, typically with their parents consenting. In schools, art, literature like poetry, story telling about the past and writing hopeful dreams for the future are encouraged. The Atan have hopes of one day returning to the stars where they believe came from and have fully set aside the concept of fixing Taerel, however exact information where they came from has been lost to the sands of time.

==Government==

The tribe of the Atan is still, nominally, known as the Reunited Shahdom of Atan Peoples, and has an uninterrupted line of rulers. The current ruler, Aishah Demeh, was appointed by the third Standing Council. While the chain of rulers does not break at any given point, the titles do. At first, the ruler over all the Atan was known as the Jakilashah (The Supreme King of the Most High) - but this practice ended with the assumption of the first and last Zaydisha ruler, Padishahbanu Kaylisha - who officially renamed the title to Padishah (the Highest King) to appear more humble to her subjects and to reach an agreement with rebel communities.

Back in the day of Ismailyaka, known to the Atans as the Platinumbra (Era of Platinum) their government was divided in three powers, the Shahate (Crown), the Penumbrate (Grand Senate) and the Lao’zuaan (People’s Council.) The Shahate had, officially, total authority over everything in the Empire (except judicial matters) and beyond, but in truth, approval from the Penumbrate (and, sometimes, the Lao) was necessary to govern. The Penumbrate had total and absolute authority over judicial affairs, being even able to sentence the Shah (though a 0-60 vote would be necessary) and begin an election or force a succession. Along with that, the Penumbrate had authority to oversee the Lao’s proceedings, and veto them when they saw fit.

Officers of the Penumbrate, known as Penums and plurally as Penumbria, were often from oligarchic families, as the position was inherited. Only a maximum of 60 seats of the Penumbrate could exist at any time, with these seats being highly coveted by all the citizens of the Shahdom. Lastly, during Ismailyaka’s rule, the Lao’zuaan was the least prestigious of the three bodies of government, but it was also the only taste of representative democracy the Atan ever had. Seats in the Lao were elected every year by the top 30% of male fighters over 21, with all females, young men, and subpar fighters not being allowed to vote. In the Lao, laws and edicts which had often no real effect were discussed - with 12 seats, rotating yearly, being a member of the Lao was not a very prestigious position. However, when united, it was able to stand up to the Penumbrate, on occasions impeaching some of its officers.

During Shah Reza’s brutal and unwavering rule, the Lao’zuaan was dissolved and it’s members arrested, in order to guarantee absolute power to the Shahate. The Penumbrate, however, had it’s own Honor Guard, which, for a very short length of time, stood up to the Janysars (Personal Force) of Reza. During this time, the Penumbrate officially impeached Shah Reza in a 0-59 vote (1 officer, who stood for Reza, was killed during the debate) - this Impeachment was the only in Atan history, and had practically no effect as the Janysars quickly stormed the building after and brutally murdered all of the Penumbria without even as much as a show trial. Padishahanu Kaydisha II, after taking over power, decided to establish a single unicameral legislature beholden to her only, the Ai’lao (Standing Council) of 10 members.

This unicameral legislature had an elite within it, the AI’dailao (Standing Presidium Council) of only 10 members, who were Kaydisha’s advisors and commanders. The Ai’lao mainly discussed boring legislation and edicts, but, once Kaydisha fell bedridden, they became extremely powerful and essentially ruled the entirety of the Atan Shahdom. Once Kaydisha fell ill, the Ai’dailao became incredibly corrupt, extorting the non-elite members of the Council along with any citizens of higher economic status. They also defunded the military to a great degree, and were one of the main culprits of the Shahdom’s final fall. However, after Lynnounis was sieged and all of its inhabitants infected, Kaydisha, with her developed sickness, dismissed all members of the Ai’lao.

The Ai’dailao fought against this decree, in what is known as the Councilman's Revolt, leading to a small outbreak with ten thousand infected. However, they were defeated by Kanman, a loyal Zaydisha commander, who put their heads on pikes and drank their blood. This was seen badly by the Maliki majority, who saw cannibalism as incredibly despicable. The second Ai’lao had no Ai’dailao, and was simply composed of 100 top-level bureaucrats and commanders. They did not have much time to discuss legislation. When the news of Kaydisha’s death arrived at the Council, they immediately had an emergency session, where they voted to establish the Laetari, emergency legions which fought the Kin’toni, holding them off in the capital for a few weeks.

During these weeks, the Council decided that it’s only choice was to flee to the Orough Wasteland, a nearby region with almost no resources… and no Kin’toni. Emergency meetings and councils were held through the falling Capital, and an effort was made to escape in droves. After the first Orough Settlement was stablished, the remaining councilmen formed the Third Council, the Ai’laoga (Grand Standing Council). The modern, tribal, Atan state is formed by three government institutions. The Shahate, with most of it’s prestige lost, had its title forcefully changed to Aishah, which simply means Standing Ruler. Its absolute power was removed, with the Aishah only having ceremonial control along with supervised command of the remaining military forces.

The current Aishah, HM Demeh, strongly believes on the division of power as the only way to return the Atan to it’s former glory. The other main institution is the Ai’laoga, which has the power to dismiss and appoint the Aishah, and acts as a executive-legislative branch of the tribe, settling disputes, promoting edicts, and ensuring the tribe’s safety. The Ai’laoga has 250 seats, with the seats being hereditary and non-elected. The third, least important institution, are the Zaikovim (Elders.) Every important aspect of the Atan polity has 10 Zaikovim who oversee it, for example, there are 10 Zaikovim of the Treasury, 10 Zaikovim of Justice, etc. The Zaikovim, once every 3 years, hold a plenary assembly, the Lao’zaikovim (Council of Elders) where they hold the exclusive power to remove a family from the Ai’laoga. No other institution, not the Shah or the Ai’laoga itself, holds this power.

==Military==

Under the Shahs, forced enlistment was enacted to ensure there were as many troops as possible and the total number of troops swelled to well over 1 million. The Atan had the most powerful and advanced armed forces on the entire planet and following the collapse, they retained much of the technology which they had from the Space Age and Genetic Age, such as chemical weapons, biological weapons and firearms. However, this lasted for only so long. Ammotion which was a commodity which could be exchanged for slaves, food, clothes and housing as well as many other illicit commodities was replicated by the Atan in mass which led to enormous economic prosperity for the Shahdom.

The Shahdom was one of the first and only armed forces on Taerel following the collapse and outbreak of the Kin'toni plague to use professional standing army uniforms. Under the leadership of the first Shah, Ismailyaka, the armed forces was a mostly Maliki organization and under the leadership of Reza, it would stay a Maliki dominated organ of the government which was used to rape, murder and oppress those which opposed the regime of Reza, with widespread basic rights abuses being reported. Under his grand daughters rule, the armed forces would once again become a Zaydiasha run organization which prioritized the needs of people they viewed as “At Alyatshah Wabatkius”, or, true believers in the power of the King and Queen in the Atan language.

The armed forces using various witch doctors which they employed and gave handsome salaries to in order to concoct the most potent chemical and biological weapons waged vicious wars where no regard for life was shown and conquered millions of square miles of land all across the planet. Weapons manufacturing would take place in mass up until the end of the rule of Kaylisha II when the Kin'toni conquest of much of the Atan lands occurred. The military was known as The Most Loyal Armed Forces of His Majesty officially, and later Her Majesty under the rule of Kaylisha II and other female Shabanus which followed her. The branches of the armed forces were the Internal Affairs Force, the Army, the Navy and there was also an attempted creation of a primitive air force under Reza, however planes simply could not be created due to the lack of fuel which was available, with the Atan being entirely dependent on their (now completely destroyed) space colonies to harvest fuel for them, and having exhausted all surface level reserves.

The modern military of the Atan is incredibly rustic, with militias led by powerful Council families being in charge of protecting the tribes. However, the Aishah directs the Shahbeti (Imperial Force), the strongest and most formal of the troops, numbering 2000 armed warriors.

==Religion==

The two major religions of the Atan people are the Maliki faith and the Zaydisha faith. The Maliki believe in a single monotheistic God which they call Malik, they believe that the entire universe was created by Malik and that the Kin'toni were sent as a punishment for the Zu’aan people for them disobeying him, as much of the Zu’aan before the collapse and Kin'toni plague were secularized in nature with atheism being widespread and as technology advanced, for nearly two thousand years religion was seen as a thing of the past and a tool of oppression by the Zu’aan people. The Maliki hold the belief that Malik sent down Reza, who they believe was sent down with a divine mandate from heaven in order to destroy the Kin'toni and bring back the glory days of the Zu’ann when they had an extensive Empire which spanned their home planet with hive cities home to hundreds of millions and colonies dotting the night sky with their orbital canons terraforming planets from around their solar system.

The Maliki believe that the death of Reza marked the first steps to the end times and that end times where all Zu’ann and other sentient beings will be judged in accordance to their deeds, honesty, faith and character will be held within a few hundred to a thousand years. Maliki furthermore believe that there will be many tests and tribulations leading up to the Day of Judgement, such as a false messiah who will be a descendant of Reza which takes control of Taerel before the true Reza returns back to Earth and kills him (the false Reza, known as the Namploof) in a battle where Namploof leads 70,000 Malikis against Reza and his army, and that the final hour of existence and the Day of Judgement will take place in Calmara.

Before the false Messiah comes, an immense era of hardship will come which will break the spirits of the Atan and Zu’aan people, many Maliki believe that the outbreak of the Kin'toni and literal destruction of Zu’aan and Atan civilization was this period of hardship to break their will whilst others hold the belief that the Zu’aan and Atan will rebuild and there will be another, far greater test. In the Book of Maliki, it states that there will come a period when there is nothing to eat so people will feed off of one anothers souls, and that there will come a day when the landscape grows so hot that mothers will not even care about feeding their newborn sons and would rather use the food and water to shield their bodies from the heat.

The Malikis do not believe God is all powerful, they believe that Malik and Hajya, the devil, are locked in a constant battle and have been since the beginning of time. Both are extremely powerful, however they hold near equal power. According to Malikis nobody has any idea how either beings came into existence - they simply exist and always have. Malikis believe that if Hajya is allowed to grow in his power by people worshiping him instead of Malik and sinning, he will become more powerful than God and take over the entire universe and turn it into his own domain. Due to this Malikis have historically outlawed anything that goes against their religious law, known as the Zeyrayiah.

The Zaydisha on the other hand believe in 3 Gods, the God of Light, the God of Darkness and the God of Peace, and that there will be a constant cycle of reincarnation until the end of time at which point there will be no after life and all matter will be destroyed, nihilistic in nature, they believe there is little point to life beyond serving their own carnal pleasures, pushing for the live and let live philosophy as they call it and making them the sworn enemy of the Maliki, who believe happiness is the greatest form of waste and is disgusting to them as it does not contribute to their God Malik being victorious in his battle against all evil.

Clashes between the two religions have been ongoing for tens of thousands of years, with them evolving over time. As of now, both of them believe it is necessary to cure the planet of the Kin'toni plague and they are at their most peaceful period as they are working together in order to find a cure.
