Biology

The Uraken are adapted to the extreme heat vast open spaces and low water availability of the Lyuia Outback. They are lean, sinewy and incredibly long-limbed of build. This allows them great speed and immense stride lengths. The dnside of this that their extreme height and narrow stance make them unstable and easily unbalanced on slopes or shifting ground. The skin is heavily callused, thick and a reddish-ochre in color. It has a layer of micro-scale formations. The skin is saturated with heat-dispersing proteins and specialized, radiation-reflecting micro-crystals.

This allows them to withstand the heat of the outback. Being thick and dry, their skin is also brittle and prone to cracking in high humidity or cold. The hair is very sparse and coarse. It only grows in small, dense patches around the joints and the nape of the neck. This hair is adapted to resist entanglement and damage from sand and thorns while providing minimal heat insulation. The eyes are small, deep set and with pronounced, bony ridges. These eyes are yellow-gold in color, and have vertically slit pupils.

The eyes have an triple-layered eyelid structure that rapidly seals against fine dust and sand. While the eyelids are down, they are blinded. The ears are just small, heavily folded structures. These are covered in tough, protective skin and dense hair tufts. The complex folds are adapted to funnel and filter out wind noise. This allows them to hear faint prey movements. The downside of this is unable to hear low wind like sounds. Nasal passages are have reinforced, movable cartilage flaps that can seal the nostrils completely during dust storms.

These stop the inhalation of sand and fine particulates. The teeth are flattened and thickened, with powerful incisors and molars for crushing bone and dry hides. These teeth have an regenerative cycle that that quickly heals chips and wear caused by gritty food and sand exposure. The clas are short, thick and blunt. These claws are adapted for running, but lack a sharp point for piercing or fine manipulation. The feet have tough, heavily padded soles with widely splayed digits. This allows them to distribute weight evenly, allowing them to travel silently and swiftly over soft sand dunes.

These padded soles also lack sensitive receptors, meaning they have poor tactile perception of the ground surface. This leads to being prone to falls on sharp or uneven stone. The muscles are adapted for extreme endurance and low-maintenance effort. This allows them to swiftly move for hours on end. Due to the focus on endurance, they lack explosive, weight-lifting-level strength. They have an cellular function that is adapted to have highly efficient metabolic pathways, that much lower the amount of water required for basic biological processes.

The downside of this is an build-up of toxic nitrogenous waste products that need them to drink a large amount of water or water rich blood and then urinate to purge.
