The Noestryn are adapted to the very cold, heavily snowy, windy Icy Hills of Jakyla. They are very dense, compact and low slung of build, with short, thick limbs to keep in the heat in the cold and be stable in blizzeds. This also means they are slow and clumsy on open ground. The skin is thick, white and overlaid with a dense layer of subcutaneous lipids and keratin scales. This allows them to keep in heat and resist the cold. This also means the cutaneous respiration is slower than normal.
Under the skin, are large, dense fat pockets for an emergency energy supply and thermal buffer. They have a thick double layer of coarse, white, hollow guard hairs on their entire bodies, to act as camouflage and thermal trapping. This also makes them easy to see in non snowy landscapes. The eyes are small, deeply set and protected by thick, oily lids. They have an high concentration of rods and a specialized light-filtering pigment. This helps them see well in glare and whiteouts. This also means they have limited night-sight.
The ears are small, and with heavy fur. The nose is large, and equipped with heat-exchange coils that warm cold air before it reaches the lungs. This stops them from internal freezing and cell damage. The fangs are short, stout and adapted to to pierce thick hide and break frozen flesh. This allows feeding on large mammals. These fangs mean they are unable to feed stealthy or painlessly. The claws are broad, blunt and shovel like to allow them to dig into packed snow and ice for shelter or stability.
Using specialized vascular shunts, they are able to move warm blood to their feet to allow them to melt snow for traction. This also stresses their core temperature regulation. The ligaments are encased in a hardened, fibrous sheath. This lowers the chance of dislocation and makes joints far more stable for moving over thick ice. Using specialized muscle fibers,, they can produce a limited amounts of body heat. This is done by rapidly contracting the muscle fibers. This allows them to have increased reaction time during sudden drops in temperature.
The downside is that it burns calories, and making feeding needed if used too much. They have a large amount of specialized anti-freezing proteins in their internal fluids to allow them survive even being frozen solid (abet unconscious). They are able to use powerful vasodilators that to swiftly force warm blood to extremities. This allows them to starve off frostbite. The lymphatic filters and recycling glands are much more densely packed. With this, they can lower heat loss from internal surfaces.
The stems cells are adapted to work well, even in the freezing cold to allow regeneration of minor wounds in the cold with minimal energy loss. This also leads to slower healing in warmer climates as the stem cells are not adapted for that. They are able to use an controlled, long-term state of metabolic suspension to survive months of starvation during even deep winter. But to take from this state, means having to spend time recovering.
